Canada is 150 years old today and that means North Okanagan residents are celebrating.
Special events are planned in virtually every community today.
In Armstrong, opening ceremonies begin at Memorial Park at 11 a.m. followed by the Canada Day cake at 11:45 a.m., displays from noon to 4 p.m., entertainment, the family fun zone and a free swim at the pool from noon to 5.m. The closing ceremonies are at 4 p.m. and then there is the Red and White Community Supper at 6 p.m.
In Cherryville, there are events in Hanson Park, including a barbecue at 11:30 a.m., bingo from 1 to 3 p.m., entertainment and the cake cutting and O Canada at 1:30 p.m.
In Enderby, there is a street market and music from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Cliff Avenue and then the parade at 11:30 a.m. Look for the car show at Barnes Park from noon to 3 p.m. and kids games and celebrations at 1 p.m. There is a free swim at the pool from 2 to 4 p.m. and fireworks at Riverside Park at dusk.
In Lumby, Oval Park hosts the public market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the raising of the Canadian flag at 10:30 a.m., the singing of O Canada at 11 a.m. and kids activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be entertainment throughout the day. From 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., there is a free swim at the pool.
In Vernon, numerous activities run at Polson Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., including entertainment, the opening ceremony at noon, kids games and a variety of displays.
And there will be fireworks. Buses will run from 8 to 11:30 p.m. from Marshall Field to reduce congestion at Kin Beach, where there will be free snacks, and a special aerial show at 9:15 p.m. The fireworks begin at 10:30 p.m. The fireworks can be viewed from throughout the area but not at Sandy Beach Mobile Home Park which is private property.
