A man who claimed to be carrying a gun along Lillooet Avenue in Harrison is believed to have been in medical distress and was not found to be in posession of a weapon.
Harrison Hot Springs Elementary (HHSE) was put in a hold and secure state the morning of May 3 after RCMP received a call about a male walking down Lillooet Road potentially carrying a fire arm.
Principal Tammy Nazarchuk used Facebook to alert parents and guardians to the situation, stating the school received a call from Agassiz RCMP about a possible threat in the area at 9:10 a.m.
“Immediately, HHSE was in a Hold and Secure. It is used when RCMP want us to secure the school due to an emergency situation occurring outside and not related to the school. All exterior doors are locked and monitored. Classes continue to function normally.”
Police safely took the man into custody and the security threat was lifted.
“I would like to thank staff and the RCMP for the quick response and professionalism,” wrote Nazarchuk, who was unable to supply the Observer with any further details.
No one was injured in the incident and police say they don’t plan to press criminal charges.
