A surcharge added to boat launch fees has raked in $5,990 for Kent Harrison Search and Rescue (KHSAR).
Earlier this year, council decided to implement the surcharge so a portion of fees collected at the public boat launch could benefit the search and rescue program, which frequently responds to calls on Harrison Lake and uses the boat launch parking area as a base command centre.
The decision was made in January after KHSAR didn’t make its usual application for grant-in-aid money – funds pulled from taxpayer dollars.
“We decided it should be more of a pay-user situation,” Harrison mayor Leo Facio told the Observer in January. “Folks that use the lake are the ones that should [help] with annual funding.”
The surcharge added an additional $2 to the $20 day pass, $10 to the $135 season pass and $20 to the $300 fleet pass.

Final numbers for 2018 revenues show the Village received $16,685 in net revenue with an additional $5,990 collected for KHSAR.
“It’s a great way to show our appreciation to the search and rescue team,” Facio said.
