Harsh winter? Think again

THE PAST winter may have seemed longer, snowier and colder than normal but if weather records are any indication, it was fairly average.

THE PAST winter may have seemed longer, snowier and colder than normal but if weather records are any indication, it was fairly average.

The day with one exception, however, may have been Feb. 6 when a storm deposited 43.2cm of snow on the city and area, most of which fortunately melted within several days.

It was the fourth largest snowstorm to hit the area since 2001, eclipsed by one storm in January 2009 and two in March 2007.

January 15 brought with it the coldest day of the season, with temperatures that dropped to -15.6C.

But overall, winter has been warmer than average. Even the coldest day came in eighth place out of the last 11 years.

Although Remembrance Day 2010 brought with it the first signs of a white winter, the snow didn’t stick on the lower elevations until Nov. 25, making this winter the second-latest one to start since 2001.

In terms of actual snowfall, the total 314 cm just topped the 11-year average of 309 cm.

And despite a snowfall warning on March 8,  just 25.7 cm of fluffy white stuff has hit the ground so far.

Although winter isn’t finished just yet, forecasts indicate the worst is over. Slight flurries and rain and scattered sunny days are projected until March 24.
