The Greater Vancouver Firefighters’ Hall of Flame calendar is known for its tanned, shirtless and muscular bodies.
The upcoming 2015 calendar is no different, with one exception: Hatzic secondary grad Katrina Davison is the first person to ever don a bathing suit top for her photo.
Davison, 33, is the first female firefighter to appear in the long-running calendar. In the selection process to choose which of the 600-plus firefighters would star in this year’s calendar, Davison garnered the most votes and won the People’s Choice title.
Despite some nerves, Davison – who grew up in Mission and graduated from Hatzic in 1999 – said she has been happy with the response.
“Everyone has been really supportive,” she told The Record. “It’s still a little overwhelming but I’m proud to be in it, to be the first female firefighter to break the barrier.”
To have a woman in the calendar, Davison said, “is now an accurate description of our department.”
Funds from the calendar go to a range of charities. Each firefighter also raises money online (at vancouverfirefighters.ca/Hall_of_Flame_Calendar) for a charity of his or her choice. Davison, who played various sports growing up, chose KidSport.
The calendar will be on sale in London Drugs outlets.
