With less than a month to the federal election, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh made a stop at a Courtenay restaurant Thursday afternoon for a question-and-answer period about health care with a group of supporters.
Singh spent about an hour chatting with a crowd of around 100 people inside Pizzeria Guerilla on 5th Street. He was introduced by Courtenay-Alberni NDP candidate Gord Johns.
Singh spoke for about 15 minutes prior to taking questions, primarily outlining his health care plan, particularly focusing on his proposed dental coverage for Canadians who make less than $70,000.
He also told supporters about his plan to help those who are struggling with housing with a rental subsidy – up to $5,000 for those families who find themselves on the brink of losing housing. He noted families should not have to choose between buying groceries or medication and paying rent.
“The housing crisis is not just a big urban center issue, it’s a crisis that’s impacting people up and down the Island, and across Canada.”
Singh took questions from the crowd on the opioid crisis, mental health funding and pharmacare.
The federal election is set for Oct. 21.
