Help shape arts, culture with public engagement

The City of Port Alberni is asking residents to tell them what arts, culture and heritage items people in the community would like to see.

What do arts, culture and heritage mean to you? The City of Port Alberni is asking residents to tell them at a public event this Saturday, Jan. 21 at Echo Centre.

The event directly stems from the 2016 Judy Rogers management review, which suggested the city look at an alternate delivery method for the AV Museum, facilitator Nene Kraneveldt said.

The public engagement event “is about sharing information about the whole sector in general,” she said. “The outcome isn’t to have a plan or alternate delivery method for the museum, it’s to have some key points to pull from to focus on a direction for the museum.”

The public engagement session is designed to get feedback from everyone in the Alberni Valley on what arts, culture and heritage items people in the community would like to see, how they should be delivered and funded.

The event is free to the public and family friendly, Kraneveldt said.

The event kicks off with opening ceremonies at 1 p.m. in the Cedar Rooms at Echo Centre, followed by a variety of events throughout the centre. A town hall meeting will take place in the Cedar Rooms from 1:30–2:15 p.m., and an “open space” discussion from 2:45–3:45 p.m. An arts, culture and heritage trade show will take place from 1–4 p.m. in the same rooms.

There will also be children’s activities and refreshments.
