An official sod-turning ceremony held Tuesday led the way for the three-month long project, which will include an expanded fitness studio with more program space and stretching area, improved free space in the gym, expansion and upgrades to the Muffin Nook and the afterschool care program areas, updated washroom facilities and upgrades to the building’s heating and weather proofing systems.
Ledcor Construction is in charge of the 830 square foot expansion, made possible thanks to a recreation infrastructure grant of $373,718 from the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. The grant is part of a $30-million provincewide initiative to fund smaller-scale recreation infrastructure in communities outside the Lower Mainland.
During construction, access to the Henderson Recreation Centre will be via the east end side doors. A temporary reception centre has been set up in the foyer outside the gymnasium.
Rec centre staff are working to minimize the disruptions and closures to the facility, however, there may be interruptions, noise disturbance and closures to the fitness studio and other areas of the centre occasionally.
The Henderson Recreation staff will notify patrons of any upcoming closures with signage and website updates as well as phone calls or emails to people in registered classes.
Residents are welcome to use the Oak Bay Recreation Centre to continue usual drop-in workouts.
The project is expected to be complete by April 15. Check the Recreation Oak Bay website at oakbay.ca and the Henderson Expansion Project notice board for regular project updates.
