Heritage ‘a key community value’: Ruttan

The Alberni Valley's culture leaders were honoured at the Alberni Valley Museum's annual Heritage Commission awards.

“Heritage is a key community value,” Port Alberni Mayor Mike Ruttan said as he prepared to present the annual Heritage Commission awards at the AV Museum last week.

“It’s important we preserve it; it’s really important that we pass on the message to those who are younger about the critical importance of heritage,” he said.

“This is a critically important role that the museum and heritage resources play in support of a healthy community by preserving and presenting community identity and cultural tourism offerings.”

Heritage commission chairperson Gareth Flostrand talked about the role of the commission, its accomplishments in 2016 and the reason for the annual awards.

K.G. (Soup) Campbell earned the Ike Patterson memorial award, presented by Kris Patterson, for Campbell’s work as a charter member of the Industrial Heritage Society, and the work he has done championing the role of saving and restoring the industrial heritage of the region.

Retiring heritage commission members Dennis Bill and David Whitworth were honoured.
