High stream flows and heavy rain in the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District

Weather in the ACRD over the next 4–5 days is likely to include heavy rain, strong winds and high stream flows.

Weather in the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District over the next 4 – 5 days is likely to include heavy rain, strong winds and high stream flows. A series of moist Pacific storms will continue to impact the South Coast for the next several days. The next storm is poised to reach the coast by early Saturday morning. Each storm will bring strong winds and heavy rain with daily rainfall amounts of 40 to 80 mm. Heavier amounts are likely for the west side of Vancouver Island. The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings.

Please monitor the latest forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada at www.weather.gc.ca. Rivers are expected to rise in response to the rainfall adding to already high conditions, with rapid rises in levels expected. This current atmospheric pattern is expected to persist throughout the next week.  With saturated soils and strong localized winds the threat of wind fallen trees will increase. Rainfall events of this nature can trigger high turbidity in community water supplies with the possibility of a boil water advisory.  Notification will be provided but in the meantime, please conserve water.

The following additional advice is provided:

• Ensure that the drains on your property are clear and unlikely to clog.

• Stay away from water courses as flows may surge and can be dangerous.

• Those living in low lying areas along streams and rivers should be extra cautious.

• Prepare for the possibility of power outages.

• Limit water use.

• Self serve sand bags and sand are available at the Beaver Creek Fire Hall.
