Terrace Sportsplex staffers suspect a hockey puck embedded with nails was intentionally used to cause approximately $4,000 in damage.
Four panes of glass, at approximately $1,000 each, were replaced in late December after being smashed at the arena and city staff now think the puck, found at the Sportsplex Jan. 17, was responsible for the breakage.
“Moving forward we want everyone to know it is against regulations to have weighted pucks or pucks with steel embedded in them. It is unsafe on many levels,” writes city director of leisure services Carmen Didier in an email to the Terrace Standard.
“Any pucks that have steel in them can cause serious harm to someone who is hit by them. As well, these weighted pucks will break the arena ice glass.”

Didier adds she does not understand why someone would hammer nails into a puck and has never seen anything like this before.
Although the person responsible for bringing in the puck is unknown, the City of Terrace warns that anyone caught using these pucks, or any other altered pucks, will be immediately banned from the facility.
