Homes found for fire victims

Tenants of an adult group home that was damaged by fire Monday might never return to the Maple Street abode.

Deputy fire Chief Bob Schlase said new placements have been found for the five developmentally disabled men – at least two of whom had lived at the split-level house for more than 20 years.

“They’ve been placed back in the system,” Schlase said. “We found a place for everyone.”

The men – along with the homeowner – were left temporarily homeless Monday, after a fire broke out in a bedroom at 1268 Maple St. around 3 p.m. The homeowner, a 90-year-old woman, has been allowed to return home, Schlase said.

Investigation determined the fire was accidental and caused by smoking materials, he said, noting fire damage was confined to the one bedroom; the home’s front end had some smoke damage.
