Hope Flight Fest is once again bringing the world of aviation to the community of Hope.
This year’s event on July 13 kicks off with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Hope Rotary Club from 7:30–10 a.m. Kids games, activities, and rides will run from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. There will also be Hope Mountain Market vendors, a Trails Crossing Friendship Centre information table with crafts, Cooper’s Foods barbecue from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Radical Raptors display featuring birds of prey in action.
“The Flight Fest helps us raise awareness and generate increased interest in aviation and the Hope Airpark,” said Tracy Mayers, acting chair for the Hope Adventure Flight Society.
The non-profit organization organizes Flight Fest as part of its mandate. Mayers said the goal of the Society is to educate the general public and school children about aviation, while providing families with an entertaining and affordable special event that celebrates all aspect of flight. Valley Helicopters will be offering rides for $30 and Fly Gravity Sports will have an exhibit on the art of hang gliding.
“It is a chance for people to come out and see their Airpark in action, while having fun and learning about aviation,” added Mayers.
COPA for Kids is also returning this year, which provides pre-registered children between the ages of eight and 17 with the chance to fly in a fixed-wing aircraft for free.
“The Flight Fest and COPA for Kids offers children a unique opportunity, one that they do not often get the chance to experience,” said Reg Hunchuk, Captain of COPA Flight 127 and one of the pilots that will be taking the children flying during the Flight Fest. “COPA provides children with a motivational experience, while generating an interest in aviation.”
Following the flight, children receive a certificate with their name, the pilots name and the type of aircraft they flew in. They also have their name listed in the COPA log book.
