Impactful people invited to come together and help Princeton charities

There is still time to purchase tickets, both for in-person and virtual attendance, to a brand new fundraising event.

Fifty-Plus Impactful People of Princeton is an opportunity to gather, or observe, and vote for the local charity that could best benefit from a $2,000 donation.

“It’s going to be so much fun,” said Kim English, regional development officer of the Community Foundation of South Okanagan Similkameen (CFSOS).

The CFSOS is organizing the event, with help from Princeton town councillor Barb Gould.

“We’ve been speaking for the past year or two about holding a fundraiser and the timing didn’t really seem right. Then this year we were talking and recognizing that with COVID, volunteers aren’t volunteering, staff in agencies are overwhelmed and other fundraisers have been cancelled,” said English.

In compliance with provincial COVID rules, only 50 in-person tickets are being sold, for $50 each.

Others may purchase tickets and participate through live streaming.

Three Princeton charities have been selected to benefit from the function; Princeton Seniors Centre, Princeton Crisis Assistance, and Princeton and District Community Social Services.

Each group will have five minutes to make a “pitch” for its cause, and the ticket holders will vote on where the prize money should be allocated.

The first place charity will receive $2,000, and the others will each receive $250.

“The charities we have selected serve the most vulnerable people in our community,” said English.

Princeton airport will be the venue, with tents erected on the tarmac to allow for social distancing.

“The health and safety of our community is most important, and we are being really thoughtful about how to hold a COVID safe function,” English said.

In the event COVID restrictions tighten in the near future, the entire gathering will be held on-line

“The response from the business community has been great,” said English, adding that donors are even approaching her without being asked.

So far every business approached to donate gate prizes or giveaways has happily agreed.

Andrew Peller Winery is donating beverages and Little Creek Grill is providing appetizers.

Weyerhaeuser Mill has signed on as a corporate sponsor.

“More details on their support will be announced at the even and it’s going to be big,” English said.

Fifty-Plus Impactful People of Princeton will be held September 17, 2020, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
