Infectious outbreaks declared at two Castlegar care homes

Visitors are advised to avoid Talarico Place and Castleview Care Centre

Two Castlegar care homes are telling visitors to stay away as both locations deal with infectious outbreaks.

Castleview Care Centre and Talarico Place are both experiencing “Scenario B outbreaks,” which means the infections are respiratory and not caused by the flu.

The Talarico outbreak was declared on Jan. 21 and the Castleview outbreak was declared on Jan. 24.

There were about a half-dozen individuals at each facility that were still ill as of Friday.

“During outbreaks, care homes increase cleaning and limit contact between individuals who have symptoms with the broader population in the home to avoid further spread of the illness,” said Interior Health spokesperson Karl Hardt.

“We ask that loved ones consider postponing visits until the outbreak is over. Above all, we want to reduce the risk of further spread of illness to other individuals in care, as they are generally frail and more susceptible to serious complications of respiratory and other illnesses.”

Interior Health also asks that anyone who is sick themselves to avoid visiting any care home.

Interior Health says the situation is monitored on a daily basis.
