Insurance company issues snow load alert

  • Mar. 10, 2011 2:00 p.m.

Revelstoke Hub Barton Insurance is advising their clients and everyone in general to remove snow from homes and other structures.

This winter’s accumulated snowfall has caused some structures to collapse under the weight and pressure, they note in an advertisement sent to the Times Review. Barton has had four claims already this season.

The company issued the following precautions:

– All roof surfaces should be inspected for excessive snow loading and cleared accordingly. Flat and low-pitched roofs are at the greatest risk of buckling.

– All roof drains should be cleared to allow for proper drainage.

– Evaluate the interior of your structure to identify any potential roof weaknesses, such as any new ceiling and wall cracks.

– Any actions to remedy rooftop issues should be performed by able-bodied adults.

The notice says some insurance policies may cover roof collapse due to snow, “but many don’t,” they wrote in an alert sent to the Times Review.

Environment Canada is forecasting a risk of thundershowers for Revelstoke overnight with five to 10 millimetres of rain.
