An investigation into a fire at Woodgrove Centre in north Nanaimo has been turned over to police.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue firefighters responded at about 1:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 13, after a fire ignited in recyclables in a storage and maintenance area of the shopping centre.
“A stack of plastic … recyclables inside a chain link-caged storage area, that some unknown person or persons ignited,” said Capt. Ennis Mond, head of Nanaimo Fire Rescue’s fire and loss prevention division. “RCMP are looking into it.”
Mond said a passerby spotted the fire in the storage area near Toys R Us and alerted a security guard.
He said the fire was contained to the storage area.
“Somebody notified the security in the mall and a security guard hit it with three extinguishers and knocked it down and then when Nanaimo Fire Rescue got there they put some water on it and put it right out.”
