Drivers along Columbia Avenue may experience intermittent delays over the next month as Fortis BC works to relocate overhead electricity lines.
The work is being done between 22nd Avenue and 24th Avenue ahead of a Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure highway improvement project and the City of Castlegar’s Columbia Avenue Phase 2 development.
Fortis BC says there may be traffic interruptions with possible single lane, alternating traffic and there may be instances where residential driveways may be blocked. Residents will receive advance notice of this work being done.
Work will typically take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and occasional weekends.
“For the safety of our crews and so that work can be completed as quickly as possible, we are asking drivers to avoid the construction area if possible, and if they are in the area, keep a look out for our crews, drive carefully and follow the instructions on the construction signage,” said Fortis BC.
Work has already begun and is expected to be completed by October 16.
The city’s project will cover Columbia Avenue/Highway 22 from 24th Street to 18th street.
The project will renew the asset life of underground water and storm utilities and improve transportation facilities for both pedestrians and highway users.
Construction on that portion of the project is slated to begin in the spring of 2021.
The city will be sharing detailed project information with the community and hosting in-person and online sessions this fall.
The city still has not heard whether a major grant from the federal government for the project has been approved.
