Walk in Her Shoes

Okanagan residents will walk or run in solidarity on Sunday, March 5 to raise awareness and funds in support of gender equality and to help end global poverty.

The second annual Okanagan CARE Canada Walk In Her Shoes challenge will take place in advance of International Women’s Day at Mission Creek Park on Sunday, March 5, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Women and girls in developing countries must walk an average of 10,000 steps every day to collect the basics their families need to survive – water, food, and firewood. This leaves little time to get an education or earn an income. CARE Canada’s Walk In Her Shoes challenge is asking Okanagan residents to walk in solidarity with women worldwide and raise funds to help break the cycle of poverty.

Donations to CARE Canada’s Walk In Her Shoes are welcome.

Be Bold for a Change

Central Okanagan Elizabeth Fry Society and Kelowna Women’s Shelter have joined forces to host Be Bold for Change, a fundraiser designed to promote gender equality and inclusivity.

The event takes place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on March 8 at Landmark 6 Centre, floor 17, 1631 Dickson Avenue.

Tickets are $35 and include a glass of wine, delicious appetizers, live music by DJ Footwerk, an opportunity to take home fabulous raffle and auction items, and an inspiring presentation by athlete and social entrepreneur Crystal Flaman.

International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievement of women while encouraging men and women to do their part to promote equality and take action to champion gender parity.

Tickets are available online.

All proceeds will be shared between Kelowna Women’s Shelter and Central Okanagan Elizabeth Fry Society, non-profit agencies who share a mandate to support women and children who’ve survived violence and rely on the generosity of the community to offer the range of services they do.

End off the day with a five-course fundraising dinner at Quail’s Gate in West Kelowna. All profits will be donated to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Kelowna and Slow Food Thompson Okanagan.
