Investigators comb through Chilliwack house following standoff

RCMP say investigation involves report of an early morning shooting

A team in hazmat suits combed through a house in Chilliwack Thursday morning (June 4).

The house on Fairview Drive on Fairfield Island was the centre of a police standoff the previous day, that involved the Emergency Response Team (ERT), a K-9 unit and more.

Chilliwack RCMP said late Wednesday that it’s an “unfolding investigation” that was “contained immediately.”

It began with the investigation of a shooting in the area early Wednesday morning, along with a call about a suspicious person in the area, Cpl. Mike Rail explained. Investigators spent Wednesday and Thursday canvassing the neighbourhood for information.

The house involved was boarded up prior to the events unfolding, and neighbours say they believe power had already been disconnected to the property. The house has been the source of neighbourhood complaints for more than two years, with constant foot and vehicle traffic.

During the standoff, the ERT employed the use of a tactical vehicle that shot a smoky substance into the home several times. There was a final arrest at about noon, when investigators moved in. A “no-occupancy” notice is now posted on the front door.

Rail said the file number is 2020-21573, and anyone with information can call either Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611.
