The City of Abbotsford is looking at building out two years worth of new sidewalk projects in 2019.
Staff is planning to spend $978,000 on new sidewalks this year. That’s double the normal $500,000/year budget, because some money allocated last year wasn’t spent.
The largest project will centre around the Riverside and King Road intersection. The city will spend $400,000 to build 365 metres of sidewalk and add trees and street lighting. The new sidewalk will run east from an existing sidewalk on King Road to Riverside, and then north, under the Highway 1 overpass to Forrest Terrace, where it will connect to another existing sidewalk. The remaining projects will cost a little more than $500,000, with the remainder spent on surveying the location and designing the improvements.
Here are the other sidewalk projects:
- Brundige Avenue: 350 metres from Primrose to Godson elementary school;
- Monte Vista Crescent: 400 metres from Valemont to Sunnyside at Hill-Tout. The route is used by kids going to Ten Broeck elementary school;
- Mt. Lehman Road: 110 metres from Old Yale Road to ambulance station;
- George Ferguson Road and Pauline Street: intersection improvements for pedestrians;
- Lynn Avenue: 115 metres to fill gap in sidewalk from Horizon to McCallum.
- A staff report says construction is expected to take place in the summer and fall, following public consultation with residents that will be impacted.
