The school district is considering making Jaffray’s school K to 12.

At a Tuesday meeting, trustee Shaun Damstrom asked the rest of the board to consider adding Grades 11 and 12 to Jaffray Elementary Junior Secondary School.

At the moment, students who finish Grade 10 in Jaffray must finish their high-school education in Fernie or Cranbrook.

“The school act allows parents to have them go to a school of their choice. Usually they go into Fernie but there are students that go into Cranbrook as well,” said Frank Lento, board chair.

There are around 200 students enrolled in kindergarten through to Grade 10 at the Jaffray school.

The board has asked staff to investigate the feasibility of adding the final two grades in Jaffray.

“We want to look at whether it’s feasible to add Grades 11 and 12 at Jaffray. We’ll be looking at the surrounding area, not only students that go to Fernie schools but also those that go to Mount Baker in the whole area – Bull River, Mayook, that area,” said Lento.
