Surrey RCMP checked nearly 3,000 drivers for signs of impairment during weekend Counter Attack efforts – and most passed the test with flying colours.
According to statistics shared Monday afternoon, just 13 motorists were cited at roadside checks conducted on the 32 Avenue diversion in South Surrey, and at Highway 10 and King George Boulevard: five were issued Immediate Roadside Prohibitions, two vehicles were impounded and five tickets were issued for various other Motor Vehicle Act infractions.
The checks were conducted between 9 and 11 p.m. on Dec. 29 and 30, in support of ICBC’s provincial impaired-driving campaign.

Officers from Surrey, White Rock and Deas Island were “targeting impaired drivers who are putting themselves and others on the road at risk,” a news release announcing the weekend campaign stated.
“Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs remains a leading cause of motor vehicle fatalities in B.C., with an average of 68 people dying in crashes every year,” Sgt. Chad Greig said in the release.
“B.C. has some of the toughest impaired driving laws and if you are caught driving while impaired you could face penalties ranging from driving suspensions and vehicle impoundments to serious fines and criminal charges.”
Greig told Peace Arch News Monday that police roadblocks would be continuing “throughout Surrey tonight on New Year’s Eve.”
