If anyone sees smoke and emergency vehicles close to the Sumas border crossing on Wednesday, don’t worry. It’s just a drill.
A joint U.S.-Canadian hazardous materials emergency drill will take place over the border all day on Oct. 16.
“This drill represents another step forward in building relationships and understanding procedures between United States and Canadian responders,” said Alex Mitchell, the City of Abbotsford’s public affairs officer.
The 10-hour drill starts at 7 a.m. and has been planned for over a year. It will involve over 50 agencies and 200 people, and will be in nearly 20 locations.
Apart from the presence of emergency response equipment being transported and some light smoke in the morning, most of the drill will not be visible to the public.
Traffic flow across the border will not be affected.
