June 19 stand-off update

A Vanderhoof man in a standoff with the police during the early morning of June 19 will appear in court on July 4.

A woman and three other men were arrested for the incident that took place on Church Avenue near Victoria Street, when the police responded to a weapons complaint and cordoned off part of the residential block in an effort to ensure public safety.

With charges including the usage of a firearm with the intent to cause injury, assault with a weapon, and probation order breach, the man remained in custody until further court proceedings. The four other suspects were released with conditions to avoid drugs, contact with one another, and possession of firearms.

Complainants and suspects are known to each other.

While the arrested individuals were familiar to the police, no further risk is believed to be posed to the public from the incident.

All members of the detachment, except for one, were involved with the lodged file.

Gas theft update

Three fuel thefts were reported to the police last week, the latest addition to the notable number of cases of gas siphoned from residential vehicles this June.

Investigation continues as the police reviews information submitted by the public, including home surveillance video.

“We understand the frustration and appreciate the reports,” Sgt. Svend Nielsen said, adding that those who suffer from fuel thefts are encouraged to report to the police, as tracking time and location of incidents will help to find suspects.

Shopping spree

A woman is charged for stealing from multiple stores in Vanderhoof’s downtown last week.

On June 25, multiple items from different stores were reported stolen at about 3:40 pm.

Reportedly browsing with three men, the woman was located and her bag revealed various items from the stores upon search.

She was also found to have been issued a warrant from Prince George.

Lawn mower MIA

Over the night of June 25, a grey Craftsman riding lawn mower was reported missing from a residence along Loop Road.

Those with information can contact the local detachment or report anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
