Summer has arrived in a timely fashion for those planning to attend MusicFest this weekend in Courtenay.

“We’re into a nice, pleasant stretch of summer here,” said Trevor Smith, a meteorologist at Environment Canada. “It doesn’t look like a heat wave or a record breaker by any means but probably mainly sunny skies for the next seven to 10 days.”

Temperatures reached a high of 21C Thursday in the Comox Valley. Clear skies and highs of 25, 26 and 28 are expected Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively. Temperatures in the upper 20s will likely continue until mid-next week.

“Probably not any records being set,” Smith said. “I think people will be pretty comfortable with this. Summer’s here sort of on time.”

June was cooler and wetter than normal but did not set any record lows. The average monthly temperature was 13.9 degrees. The historic average is 15.

“Most of the coolness was coming from the daytime high, so we had a lot of cloud cover,” Smith said, noting the overnight minimum average equalled the monthly minimum average of 10.6.

The daytime maximum average was 17.2 for the month — the third coldest on record dating back to 1944. The normal is 19.4.

Total rainfall in June was 77.4 mm, compared to the normal 44.2, marking the ninth wettest June on record.

There were 18 days with rain in June, tied for the third highest on record. The average is 12 days.

“Typically it’s not a great month,” Smith said of June.
