In its first annual Hidden Treasures Sale, Keating Self Storage opened its doors to the community to host arguably one of the most epic garage sales on the Peninsula, all for a good cause.
The Hidden Treasures Sale raised $24,000 which will go towards the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation (SPHF).
Back in the spring, Keating Storage invited members of the community to register to bring in all their hidden treasures, selling of things they no longer wanted.
Registration was $50 and all of the money went to support the foundation.
Owners of Keating Self Storage, Bonnie Campbell and Frank Wright were happy to be involved.
“We feel it’s important to give back to the community and we strongly support the work at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation,” said Campbell.
Wright said they wanted to do something meaningful. With Campbell’s family having a long tradition of philanthropic work, he said they wanted to continue the tradition.
Community members who attended the giant storage wars meets community swap meet also had the option of renting a banquet style table to hold all of their items (an additional fee).
“Then people had the opportunity or the choice to either take their profits for themselves or they could further donate whatever they made off of their tables to the Hospital Foundation,” said Donor Relations Manager Renn Bibeau.
Despite the rain, many people still came out. The crews blocked off Duracme Road and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary was there with food and beverages for purchase with all proceeds going to the auxiliary.
The foundation was also there with games, face painting and clowns for the kids, making it a family friendly event.
“We had some small business owners come out and it offered a really cool variety,” said Bibeau.
The money will be donated in support of the Hospital Foundation’s 2015 campaign to create a larger, custom-designed Surgical Daycare Unit. That campaign is close to reaching its $2 million goal, a target they hope to achieve during this Saturday’s gala.
