Keep your hands on the wheel

The police have a message for northwest residents this Valentine’s Day: don’t call or text your Valentine while driving.

Traffic services say that distracted driving is one of the major contributing factors in fatal collisions, and police will be conducting a month-long awareness and enforcement campaign against distracted drivers.

The fine for driving while using a non-hands-free electronic device is $167, and drivers caught texting or emailing can receive three driver penalty points.

Drivers can use a hands-free device or pull over their vehicle to the side of the road before taking a call.
