The Kanaka Education and Environmental Partnership Society (KEEPS) has not been able to get their fish fence out of Kanaka Creek this year, because high water flows have thwarted every attempt.
Last Thursday, the water was as high as the bottom rung on this fence, where KEEPS director Michael Buckingham and education coordinator Ross Davies watch hatchery manager Darin McLean and other volunteers attempt to winch logs off the fence.
The fence was used to transport salmon to the hatchery, where 80,000 coho and 300,000 chum eggs were taken in December.
Getting the fish fence out of the creek can be hazardous in high water, which has been frequent this year.
In 2007, the water flows were higher than the fence.
