The 34th annual Pushor Mitchell Kelowna Apple Triathlon brought out just under 1,000 athletes from across Canada and the United States this weekend.
The fastest time in the Olympic distance on Sunday was clocked by Shawn Wilyman of Victoria in the 25-29 age men’s category. He finished first overall in a time of 2 hours, 2 minutes and 23 seconds. The second and third fastest times were set by the winner of the 18-24 age men’s category, Carsten Lapointe of Vancouver (2:04:50), and Patrick Howell of Dawson Creek, who came second in the men’s 25-29 age category in a time of 2:06:39.
The three fastest women at the Olympic distance were Lauren Babineau in the women’s 25-29 age category (2:18:28), Carmelle Guidi-Swan in the 40-44 age category (2:24:05) and Alanna Dyck in the 35-39 age category (2:24:10).
In the sprint distance, the three top male finishers were:
• Thomas Brown of Edmonton in the 25-29 age category (1:02:33)
• Owen Harris of Kelowna in the 19-and-under age category (1:05:33)
• Chad Reid of Vancouver in the 40-44 age category (1:06:14)
The top three female finishers in the sprint distance were:
• Adeline Maunder Edmonton in the 20-24 age category (1:06:14)
• Alesha Miller of Vernon in the 20-24 age category (1:08:37)
• Jessica Deglau of Kelowna in the 35-39 age category (1:11:19)
The triathlon was held under sunny blue skies in 30 C weather in downtown Kelowna Sunday.
Triathletes ranged in aged from an eight-year-old in Saturday’s kids event, to the oldest racer, Bruce Butcher, 82, from Kamloops, who crossed the finish line Sunday in a time of 2:25:32.
The Apple Triathlon on Sunday included the age group sprint and Olympic distances, which also represented the B.C. provincial championships.
