Kelowna’s Bicycles for Humanity is preparing another shipment of children’s bikes, trikes, scooters and other small two-wheelers for people living in the poverty-stricken Africa country of Ghana.
While all of these modes of transportation have been donated for the cause, not all of them are suitable for shipment abroad, and so those left behind will be auctioned off to local families next Saturday, Oct. 15, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the St. Charles Garnier Church, 2645 Benvoulin Rd., in Kelowna.
Thee event will be a unique silent auction in which items have a “buy it now” price.
Buyers can either write down a bid or they can pay the low asking price and take it away. A snowmobile, furniture, automobiles and an assortment of household and automotive items are also on the block.
The funds raised by sales are used to ship a 40-foot container full of donated bicycles to Ghana.
Loading takes place on Nov. 6 and a team of volunteers is able to get close to 500 bikes into the steel shipping container. This is done by removing pedals and the front wheel, and lowering the seat.
Every penny raised goes toward shipping bikes and helping Syrian refugees in the Okanagan.
Anyone wishing to donate goods to the sale can contact Keith Germaine 250-764-2942.
