Kelowna grandmothers making strides for Africa

Kelowna Grandmothers For Africa invites area residents to walk or run for Africa on June 3.

Kelowna Grandmothers For Africa will once again Stride To Turn the Tide against HIV/AIDS, June 3 at Mission Creek park.

In Africa women and girls are the most vulnerable in regards to violence, lack of education, gender equality and health issues. The Kelowna Grandmothers For Africa work towards restoring hope, dignity and the chance to move forward with their dreams through community based programs. The need continues for more funding to be directed to grassroots initiatives that in turn will build resilience and economic independence.

The Grandmothers To Grandmothers Campaign, through the Stephen Lewis Foundation, becomes indispensable in light of the decrease in international funding for Africa. It is difficult to imagine living in a community where girls are five times more likely to be infected with AIDS than boys, and where 7,500 girls and young women a week are being infected. Local grassroots organizations support these young women and their grandmothers, through education, HIV testing and support groups.

Kelowna Grandmothers For Africa invites the community of Kelowna to walk or run for community-led organizations in Africa on June 3 at Mission Creek Park.

Financial support is key to stability, hope and self-determination for African grandmothers and their families. For more information go to www.kelownagrandmothersforafrica.com or phone 250-764-9247.
