Residents of Gramiak Road, Collison Road and Mary Court are, once again, doing their part to get Kelowna in the Christmas spirit.
Houses along the three Rutland streets—known as Candy Cane Lane—have been lit up with thousands of Christmas lights.
Damjan Madjar, organizer of Candy Cane Lane, said this year’s light display is “bigger and better than last year.”
“Literally one truckload of LED lights was donated by the City of Kelowna; about 70 boxes of LEDs were donated by FortisBC,” said Madjar.
“I would say about 50 houses are (lit up).”
Madjar’s passion for Candy Cane Lane dates back to his childhood memories in Slovenia, when his parents used to take him and his sister around to see all of the Christmas lights.
With the hopes of spreading that feeling, the Candy Cane Lane organizer spends hours putting up his own light display, as well as several of his neighbours’ lights.
“I’ve maybe done four or five full days of putting up lights…there are some neighbours who can’t put the lights up themselves, so I tell them I’ll do it for them.”
This Saturday Candy Cane Lane will host a community event, featuring live music by Anna Jacyszyn and Teena Ree Gowdy, as well as hot chocolate and coffee donated by the Tim Hortons in Glenmore.
The event will take place, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the corner of Gramiak and Collison Roads.
Candy Cane Lane lights will be on display every night until Jan. 1.
Donations of non-perishable food items for the Kelowna Community Food Bank will be accepted at a food bin on the corner of Gramiak and Collison Roads.
