Kenny Dam Road speed limit in dispute

More than 40 residents who live along Kenny Dam Road have signed a request to council to consider changing the speed limit on the road to 80 kilometres per hour within the municipal boundaries.

More than 40 residents who live along Kenny Dam Road have signed a request to council to consider changing the speed limit on the road to 80 kilometres per hour within the municipal boundaries.

Last fall a resolution was passed by council to reduce the speed limit within the municipal boundary on Kenny Dam Road from 80 kph to 60 kph to improve the safety for road users.

The resolution passed, but was not supported by councillors Steve Little and Darren Carpenter.

In a written request to council received on July 13, residents on Kenny Dam Road took issue with not being consulted on the change.

“The motion was made and passed without the residents that live within the district boundaries who use this road many times a day being consulted … while we don’t quarrel with the intent, we believe that if safety was an issue, we the residents should have been able to give our input,” the letter stated.

The mayor and council discussed the request during a council meeting on July 20, during which a motion by councillors Carpenter and Little to reinstate the speed limit to 80 kph as before, was defeated.

Council members then discussed a compromise and councilor Jack French created a motion, which was seconded by councillor Carpenter to establish the speed limit on Kenny Dam Road as 60 kph from the bottom of the hill and increase it to 70 kph at the top of the hill to the municipal boundary.

Councillor Louise Levy stepped in and made a motion to postpone councillor French’s motion until the next council meeting and that in the mean time administration provide mayor and council with data from the RCMP on accidents on Kenny Dam Road, as well as  consultation with local residents.
