The District of Kent is re-branding some of its seniors’ programs to help get its senior citizens out and active in the community.
The program, called “Get Active in Your Community,” aims to get seniors involved in community activities, whether it’s volunteering at different organizations or enjoying part-time jobs in roles like fitness instructors for the Community Recreation and Cultural Centre.
The program will also have a health and wellness component, inviting seniors to participate in outdoor activities and wellness initiatives, like the Health and Wellness fair held at the rec centre in May.
According to director of community services and projects Jennifer Thornton, this new approach will help more of the district’s senior’s programs to be eligible for funding from the New Horizons for Seniors grant.
“It’s more of a call to action to our older adults, who have a little bit more free time in their day,” Thornton said. “A whole lot of initiatives and opportunity for the $25,000” grant.
Last year, the District of Kent received $25,000 from the New Horizons for Seniors grant program to install outdoor exercise equipment in Centennial Park.
