The April 25 annual general meeting of the Keremeos Irrigation District attracted more attention than usual this year.
Forty-five people were in attendance for the meeting, where one director’s position was up for re-election.
Jordy Bosscha, a 15 year member of the board, lost his seat to Bob Thurston in a two way race.
The meeting also dealt with the KID’s annual Report on Operations and Report from Trustees, during which the subject of the reservoir was raised.
A number of questions were fielded regarding the controversial project. Residents wanted to know about the present status of the reservoir project and the grant application. They were told that once the grant was approved, there would be public information meetings held, followed by a referendum.
KID Superintendent Kevin Huey said that the irrigation district had been provided with a list of questions regarding the reservoir project prior to the meeting, and that those questions had been answered, in addition to further questions that arose from the floor.
Huey also clarified that the location of the proposed reservoir was chosen by the engineering consultant as the optimum site and the district has only secured a statutory right of way. The ownership of this land is not in any way connected to the district and relevant to this project.
The district’s $300,000 reserve fund for the reservoir remains intact, Huey added, saying that the money could only be applied to major system upgrades that had been identified in the 10 year plan.
