Construction on the Kicking Horse Dike Revitalization is wrapping up, with the project slated for completion by the end of August.
Currently, concrete and flat work are ongoing, before crews begin work to install the overhead entrance structures, site furnishings and landscaping, as part of the beautification aspect of the project.
There will be a planned grand opening event this fall once construction is complete.
There will also be a competition in early August to help name the revitalization area, with more details to come.
The Kicking Horse River Dike Improvement Project is funded through The Federal Gas Tax Fund in British Columbia as administered by the Union of BC Municipalities, and represents the largest infrastructure grant the Town of Golden has ever received at $5.87 million.
Over 65 per cent of this amount is allocated for this specific area with the rest of the funds used to heighten dikes elsewhere in the community over the last year.
The design for the downtown riverfront area was informed through public engagement in late 2019 and into 2020 The beautification component, valued at approximately $1.2 million, is being funded through the Resort Municipality Initiative.
Once completed, the project wil transform the riverfront space with the addition of a walkway, patios, view points and more.
The infrastructure of the dike will help protect Golden form the risks of river flooding, especially as river levels rise in spring.
Construction has been ongoing since October 2019.
