Kimberley RCMP 4th quarter policing report

Calls for service down in 4th quarter; that's very typical says Cpl. Chris Newel

Cpl. Chris Newel of the Kimberley RCMP visited Kimberley City Council this week to deliver the Fourth Quarter Policing Report. Newel reported that the detachment was called to investigate/attend 445 calls for service in this quarter which is 203 (-30 %) less calls than the previous quarter and 28 less calls (-6%) from the same quarter in 2014. The spring and summer quarters are always higher than fall and winter, he said.

“Skiers have trouble skiing hungover, golfers don’t,” he said. “It’s pretty typical for calls for service to drop.”

Other than that, Newel says police continue to monitor those individuals on Court Ordered Conditions.

“In September and October we did 57 checks, from October to December we did over 70. Some of those persons are suspects in our rash of thefts from vehicles during the summer months. For the most part the subjects were compliant and no charges were pursued but thefts have dropped to almost none in the past few months.”

Newel says that this past weekend one individual was not at home, where he should have been under orders, and that is being followed up with probation.

He says that the manpower situation at the detachment has evened out after shortages made for a “grueling” summer.

“We are allotted ten members, eight city and two provincial, though we usually run one short. This summer there were only five. It was a tough go. With the manpower now at nine, it’s much better.”
