Enderby officials are taking pen to paper to ensure a local organization recovers from a devastating slide and flood.
City council has agreed to provide a letter of support to the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre, which sustained significant damage when Cooke Creek overflowed its banks May 2.
“As they move forward with applying for senior government grants, we want to show our support,” said Mayor Howie Cyr.
“It’s a fixture in our region with education and the environmental good it does.”
The centre is seeking funding from government and non-government sources so it can become largely operational before the salmon arrive this year.
“This year anticipates another record run of fish in our river which heightens tourism in our area and specifically the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre,” said Shona Bruce, society spokesperson, in a letter to council.
“We are the hub of salmon for our river and a resource appreciated by many.”
Damage is estimated to be about $250,000.
Cyr is confident the centre can rebuild.
“I hope levels of government — federal and provincial — will step up to the plate because it’s a vital part of our community,” he said.
