Kitimat naturalists awarded for their work

Efforts to protect and enhance resources at the Kitimat river recognized

Kitimat’s very own naturalists have received a prestigious award recognizing the club for its work in the district.

The Kitimat Valley Naturalists Club, a member club of BC Nature and Nature Canada, are this year’s recipients of the Irving Fox Award which recognizes outstanding contributions to the sustainability of natural and cultural resources in northwest B.C.

The award goes to the club for its environmental stewardship and efforts to protect and enhance resources at the Kitimat river and estuary through participation in government intervenor programs.

Some of the other activities that the Kitimat Naturalists were recognized for are eelgrass restoration, numerous bird surveys and research, bat protection, and amphibian board monitoring.

The award is in memory of the great environmentalist Irving Fox who for decades helped to shape government programs that protected nature.

The 2018 award was announced by the Smithers-based Bulkley Valley Research Centre.
