Knife-wielding man pepper sprayed, shot with plastic bullets in police takedown

36-year-old man in custody, facing charges

A man believed to be high on drugs was pepper sprayed, shot with plastic bullets and eventually arrested after slashing a truck’s tire in Abbotsford Tuesday afternoon, police say.

The incident happened in the 2400 block of Clearbrook Road shortly before 2 p.m., according to Sgt. Judy Bird with the Abbotsford Police.

She said the 36-year-old man is facing charges for breach of parole, mischief and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

She said he was pepper sprayed and shot with an ARWEN gun, which fires plastic bullets, when he refused orders from police to drop his knife. Judging by his demeanor, she said police believe he was impaired at the time.

No one was injured, Bird said.

It’s not clear what, if any, relationship the man has with the owner of the Dodge Ram he is accused of targeting.
