Dwindling numbers of kokanee in Kootenay Lake mean fishers will be limited to just three more days of angling in 2019.

Fishers can only catch up to five kokanee today and July 1 to 2, as opposed to last year’s 28-day season. The rest of the year will be catch and release for the west arm of the lake, according to a statement released Monday by the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development.

Fishing was also allowed Monday.

“This reduced angling opportunity is in response to uncertainty around current kokanee numbers,” said the ministry. “The reduction in openings will reduce the risk of overharvest to maintain spawner escapements for conservation.

“Kokanee are an important part of the natural ecosystem. Surplus kokanee, after conservation targets are met, provide an excellent fishery opportunity. The ministry and its partners will continue their management efforts to ensure the long-term health of kokanee populations.”
