Ladysmith crash leaves Cedar teen dead

A 15-year-old boy is dead after a fatal accident in Ladysmith early Saturday morning in which speed may have played a factor.

Ladysmith RCMP responded to the single motor vehicle incident on Reiber Road shortly before 5 a.m.

The teen, who is from Cedar, was found deceased when police arrived on scene and it’s believed he had been in the passenger seat.

The 16-year-old driver and two passengers in the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

“The preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle had been travelling south bound on Brenton Page Road when it went off road, rolled down a steep bank before coming to rest approximately 150 below on Reiber Road,” said Staff Sgt. Ken Brissard.

RCMP are continuing their investigation but early details have led them to believe speed may have been a factor in the incident.

The Nanaimo District Lacrosse Association posted on its website over the weekend that its thoughts are with Snuneymuxw First Nation, the NDSS Lacrosse Academy and “all those athletes within our own association who are broken hearted.”

“He was a quiet, hard working athlete that I had the pleasure to coach for the last few years. I am devastated for his family, his friends, his teammates, his coaches, and all that he touched with his sly little grin and his warm heart,” said coach Andy Reynolds.

Tributes for the Cedar teen are pouring in on social media. The Chronicle is withholding the publication of the boy’s name out of respect for the family.

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating.
