Ladysmith RCMP are continuing to investigate what led to a serious collision in Saltair last Thursday that left three people injured, including an elderly woman in her 80s who was extricated from one of the vehicles.
Chemainus Road was shut down in both directions shortly before 3 p.m. at the intersection of South Oyster School Road after a red Ford pickup truck and Mazda SUV collided.
RCMP told the Chronicle that it’s believed the pickup was travelling northbound when it came into contact with the other vehicle.
The Mazda spun off the road and slammed hard into the ditch causing both to driver and elderly passenger to suffer injuries.
Chemainus firefighters extricated the senior from the vehicle and she was placed on a spinal board next to the vehicle.
The 57-year-old driver of the truck also reported having neck pain.
All three were transported to the local hospital in Duncan.
A local school bus was among the long line of vehicles stopped on Chemainus Road and children were escorted past the accident scene.
RCMP said the circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.
