Lafarge Canada has donated land along Comox Road to the Comox Valley Regional District, which is intended to extend the existing Dyke Road park along the waterfront.

“We are very appreciative of this generous donation as this connects with our long-term plan of developing the Dyke Road greenway as part of the regional district’s parks and greenways strategic plan,” said Rod Nichol, CVRD director for Lazo North (Area ‘B’).

“Not only does this natural space establish a connection to other parks and greenways, it contributes to recreation opportunities and wildlife habitat along the beautiful estuary,” said CVRD board chair, Bruce Jolliffe.

The property, which contained an old cement silo, was officially donated in July of this year. There was no cost to the regional district, apart from obtaining the licence of occupation and the responsibility of taking over the waterfront lot infrastructure.

“Lafarge recognizes the value and significance of this former silo land both from an environmental conservation standpoint and one of giving back to the community,” said Don Renwick, Lafarge general manager.  “We are excited to donate this land to the CVRD for their use and conservation as it aligns with our core values as a company, to protect the environment and build better communities in which we work.”

In addition, the CVRD has also acquired 1.6 hectares of waterfront property under tenure from the Province to be developed for recreational use. More information about CVRD’s parks and trails can be found at www.comoxvalleyrd.ca/parksandtrails .
