Vernon is moving ahead with expanded lake access but not as much as first anticipated.
Council has agreed to develop four access sites on Okanagan Lake in 2018 although the original plan was for eight.
“We’ve approved some to be developed and at others, we will put signage up so the public knows they exist,” said Mayor Akbal Mund.
The access sites to be fully developed are two on Tronson Road, one on Lakeshore Road and one on Okanagan Landing Road.
At three other sites, location signs will be installed as well as garbage cans.
Mund insists finances were a significant factor when determining what access sites will be developed in 2018.
“Number six (on Tronson Road) is quite long and steep. Thinking cost, what will the path cost to get down there?” he said.
Coun. Juliette Cunningham has been lobbying for more access sites to be developed but she is satisfied with only doing four in 2018.
“We’re not giving them up permanently,” she said of the other sites.
Cunningham added that any money currently saved by not doing all of the access sites could be put towards a beach on Lakeshore Road and Hurlburt Park.
