Lake Country targets funding cut rumours

District insists the school liaison officer remains a priority

The District of Lake Country is trying to tackle rumours.

The municipality denies that the school liaison officer will not be funded after this school year.

“Lake Country mayor and council put such a high priority on this role that in 2008, they made a formal motion to ensure that the role of school liaison officer was funded when a new RCMP member was hired,” states a release.

The school liaison officer is a general duty member during the summer months and outside of school hours.

The RCMP are meeting with the Central Okanagan School District and the municipality to explore the possibility of modifying the school liaison officer schedule to meet broader community needs, while still having a consistent officer assigned to each school.

“It is good to have the position staffed with members that live here or have kids,” said Sgt. Jayson Lucash, with the RCMP.

“They have a personal investment in the community.”
