A 68-year-old man from Lake Cowichan is dead after a single-vehicle accident on Highway 18 on Dec. 27.
Just before 1:30 a.m, an officer from the Lake Cowichan RCMP was conducting patrols on an unrelated matter and discovered the crash scene approximately two kilometres east of Lake Cowichan on the highway.
The vehicle was discovered in the north-side ditch, and the sole occupant was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.
It’s the second serious accident on Highway 18 in recent days.
On Dec. 22, Lake Cowichan RCMP were called to the scene of a three-vehicle crash at about 10:45 a.m.
There was one person in each of the three vehicles.
All were taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries, with one taken to a larger area hospital with more serious injuries.
“Initial information is that an eastbound car lost control due to weather and road conditions,” said Sgt. Janelle Shoihet, media relations officer for the RCMP’s E Division.
“The vehicle spun out and collided head on into a pickup truck travelling in the westbound lane. A second truck travelling in the westbound lane also collided head on into the spun out car.”
RCMP are continuing to investigate the accident.
