Unity Christian School has purchased an 8.1 acre parcel of land for potential future growth.
Matt Van Muyen, System Principal for the school, says the land acquisition supports their long-term vision. The parcel is “just down the road” from their current campus on Hack Brown Road in the Eastern Hillsides.
The school has experienced steady growth over the past eight years, he adds, and that growth is expected to continue.
“We recognize that the Eastern Fraser Valley, particularly Chilliwack, is a growing community, and our school has been growing along with it. We are meeting more and more new families moving into our community and many of them are seeking Christian education,” he says.
Unity had set up a Land Acquistion task force as part of their strategic plan, and when that group presented a motion for the property purchase it was unanimously approved.
“We are excited about the additional land, as it promises to be a blessing for the long-term future of our school” says John Kampman, who also serves as the Unity school board chair.
“As more families move into our community, and we have more alumni having their own families, we want to ensure that we have the capacity to serve them and our community in the future. Having additional land on the same road as our current campus will allow us to remain a Pre-K – 12 school community in a single location, and that is significant,” adds Van Muyen.
Their next steps are to develop long term plans for the property. The property is currently undergoing rezoning at the municipal level for their purposes.
This is not the first expansion for the school. Originally named Chilliwack Christian when it began in 1969, Unity Christian School has been serving families in the Eastern Fraser Valley for more than 50 years.
They built a large expansion in 2013 that doubled their capacity, and a smaller expansion in 2016 that included a two-story, four classroom addition.
Unity is an interdenominational Christian School and currently serves more than 530 students K – 12, as well as a preschool program for 40 students. Students attend from Yarrow, Chilliwack, Agassiz (in partnership with Agassiz Christian School), Harrison, and Hope.
