Vernon taxpayers won’t be helping with restoration of a heritage building.
Council has denied a grant request from the Okanagan Landing Community Association to repaint the exterior of the CPR station house in Paddlewheel Park.
“We gave them $5,000 two years ago,” said Coun. Patrick Nicol referring to the city policy which says an organization can only receive a grant every five years.
The estimated cost of painting the building, which is more than 100 years old, is $11,760.
Music School Grant Hits Sour Note
Vernon’s attempts to leverage funding for a community project have failed.
The city had asked the North Okanagan Regional District to provide funds so the foundation on the Vernon Community Music School can be replaced.
However, the BX-Swan Lake and BX-Silver Star electoral areas say that they are unable to participate.
“At this time, there are no funds available as 2011 Area C discretionary grant funding has been allocated,” said Mike Macnabb, BX-Silver Star director, in a letter.
The city recently decided to provide $15,000 to the music school.
The city also asked the electoral areas and Coldstream to also provide funding because youth from those jurisdictions make use of the school.
“They can use it as leverage when they go to Coldstream and Areas B and C (for funding),” said Mayor Wayne Lippert at that time.
